Blueberries are just about the best fruit you can eat when it comes to anti-ageing.
Blueberries not only provide fabulous healthy ageing nutrients, they are also categorised as a superfood – making blueberries an anti-ageing superfood!
A superfood is generally rich in beneficial vitamins, they will usually have at least 25 percent or more of the recommended intake of a beneficial nutrient and they will provide health-promoting or protective substances when consumed.
So why is a simple little blueberry so super?
Blueberries are rich in Vitamin C, which is an essential vitamin for good health and
particularly important for healthy ageing. Vitamin C is an antioxidant which regenerates Vitamin E, preventing cholesterol from oxidation. Vitamin C also assists to produce
collagen which holds ageing muscles, bones and other tissues together; it protects from bruising by assisting to keep cell walls and blood vessels firm; Vitamin C assists with iron and folate (from plant sources) absorption; it assists with wound healing and infection resistance; and Vitamin C keeps your gums and teeth healthy which is also very important as we age.
What makes blueberries super for healthy ageing?
Blueberries are an antioxidant powerhouse. Antioxidants inhibit damage to body cells, by significantly slowing or preventing damage from oxygen within body cells. Research has associated antioxidants with improving the immune system and lowering the risk of infection and some cancers. These are all extremely important elements for healthy ageing and you will often see antioxidants linked to any nutritional information relating to anti-ageing.
Blueberries also provide beneficial phytonutrients. Phytonutrients are naturally occurring
compounds that have been linked to fighting or reducing the risk of some diseases. Blueberries are a great source of phytonutrients called anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are plant pigments that destroy damaging free radicals (by-products of oxidation in cells, resulting in unstable molecules) which, if left to roam in the body, usually damage DNA genetic material, age the eyes and facilitate cancer.
Blueberries also provide dietary fibre, which assists with healthy bowels as we age.
So, try adding blueberries to your daily healthy ageing diet. One serve is half a cup or 74g. Enjoy!
